The Apparition of Christ to St. Mark

The Apparition of Christ to St. Mark

Rosand, David. Myths of Venice: The Figuration of a State. Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina, 2001. Print.

This piece of artwork is a portion of the Pala d’Oro in which Christ appears to St. Mark.  In the original piece, Christ appears to St. Mark while St. is in prison and says, “Pax Tibi Macre Evangelista Meus,” which means “Peace be with you, Mark, my Evangelist.”  This phrase inspired numerous other pieces of artwork such as The Dream of St. Mark (Rosand, Myths of Venice, 2, 53).
