MISCELLANEOUS INFO

Architecture:
-The current Basilica di San Marco was constructed in 1071 by Byzantine and Venetian artists.  Because of the construction during the 11th century, the architecture has heavy Byzantine influence. 
-The architectural plan of the Basilica di San Marco is a Greek cross plan, pictured below. 


-Five domes sit at the top of the Basilica di San Marco.  There is one at the intersection of the cross, and at each end of the cross.

Venetian History:
-Venice was supposedly founded on March 25, 421 the day of the Annunciation.
-After being chased out of their homelands by barbaric tribes, people built Venice on a seemingly inhabitable marshland.

-
-Because of its geographical isolation, Venice developed independently. 

Recurring Themes:
-Venice claims strong ties to the Virgin Mary.
-There are many artistic examples of a fabricated Venetian history used to promote the city as the ultimate Christian republic.
-Inspired by the concept of praedestinatio, Venetians believed that they were entitled to the relics of St. Mark.
