Mosaics

Mosaics


The mosaics in the Basilica di San Marco are perhaps its most intriguing pieces of art.  The mosaics depict both historical and fictional stories.  They are constructed out of small, individual pieces of glass called tesserae.  The tesserae are placed at different depths and angles, so each piece reflects light differently.  Because most of the tesserae in the Basilica di San Marco are gold, the interior of the basilica appears to be a shimmering gold color.  This blog explores the following mosaics in greater detail:
