The Pala d’Oro is one of
the most famous pieces of artwork in the Basilica
di San Marco. It is an example of
Byzantine artwork made up of enamels. It
exists as an altarpiece to the Basilica
di San Marco. The Pala d’Oro is a two-part altarpiece that
depicts the story of St. Mark and the doge’s portrait. The upper piece of the Pala d’Oro was taken from Constantinople in 1204 and connected to
the lower piece in 1343.
