The Abduction of the Body of St. Mark

In 828, two
Venetian merchants, Buono da Malamocco and Rustico da Torcello, took the relics
of St. Mark from Alexandria and brought them to Venice. These merchants removed the body from
Alexandria based on the concept of praedestinatio, or the idea that
Venice was predestined to be the final resting place for St. Mark. This mosaic depicts the removal of the body
of St. Mark from Alexandria by these two Venetian merchants (Rosand, Myths of Venice, 2, 53).
